Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents

Designed specifically for chief residents, the Leadership Skills Training Program for Chief Residents workshop offers incoming chiefs a pathway to success in their leadership role.
This three-day, experiential workshop consists of engaging, interactive small-group sessions and exercises that provide tools to enhance their understanding of interpersonal communication and group dynamics, including skills critical to success and satisfaction as both a clinician and a leader.

The multidisciplinary course allows participants to interact with and learn from residents in different specialties and from large and small organizations, providing a wide range of perspectives, as well as valuable networking opportunities. Professional contacts made during these intensive and transformative learning environments often carry through an entire career.
Key leadership concepts are explored, including:

  • Emotional intelligence
  • Self-awareness and behavior tendencies
  • Self-management
  • Group dynamics
  • Empathy
  • Leadership styles
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Conflict management
  • Unconscious and implicit biases
  • Strategies to improve engagement and decrease burnout within programs
  • How a chief resident fits into the larger health care system

The pragmatic curriculum also offers opportunities to develop real-world ideas for improving participants’ specific programs.
